Advent Readings 2024

First Sunday of Advent, December 1

Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” In the season of Advent we look forward to the celebration of the first coming of Jesus, our Messiah. We also remember that we are anticipating His second coming.

We remember how the world was in darkness, until the Light of the World came into it on that first Christmas day. As Christmas approaches, we see how the light increases on the Advent wreath, until Christmas day when the Light of the world has come. In the season of Advent we remember the ancient expectation with which people waited for the Messiah, and we prepare our hearts, renew our desire, for His Second coming.

We encourage you to read these at home and ponder them further, talk about them in your family, and pray through how the Lord would want to prepare your heart in this season of Advent.

The Prophets’ Candle of Hope

As the prophets foretold long ago of the coming Messiah, so we too remember the first coming of our Messiah, the Lord Jesus.

We wait with hope and anticipation for the second coming of
Jesus, the Light of the World.

Reading 1

Isaiah 9:2,6-7

The people who walk in darkness
    will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
    a light will shine…

For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
    And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
 His government and its peace
    will never end.
He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David
    for all eternity.
The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies
    will make this happen!

Isaías 9:2, 6-7

El pueblo que camina en oscuridad
    verá una gran luz.
Para aquellos que viven en una tierra de densa oscuridad,
    brillará una luz.

Pues nos ha nacido un niño,
    un hijo se nos ha dado;
el gobierno descansará sobre sus hombros,
    y será llamado:
Consejero Maravilloso, Dios Poderoso,

Isaiah 60:19-20

No longer will you need the sun to shine by day,
nor the moon to give its light by night,
for the Lord your God will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun will never set;
your moon will not go down.
For the Lord will be your everlasting light.
Your days of mourning will come to an end.

Isaias 60:19-20

Ya no necesitarás que el sol brille durante el día,
ni que la luna alumbre durante la noche,
porque el Señor tu Dios será tu luz perpetua,
y tu Dios será tu gloria.
 Tu sol nunca se pondrá;
    tu luna nunca descenderá.
Pues el Señor será tu luz perpetua.
Tus días de duelo llegarán a su fin.
